You're back!

Hello, and good to see you editing again! I hope all is well. Yay! Randy Kryn (talk) 11:56, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Randy, thanks for your message and warm welcome! Yes, I was retired from here for a few years, but decided to come back to it! Hope you're keeping well! :) --woodensuperman 11:58, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Fine here too. Glad you came back, although you know how addictive it is (I've put into place a few safeguards to contain my wikiaddiction, never looking at the internet on a phone, time cutoffs, etc.). Things going well here, and the navboxes have grown but still not seen on mobile (at least I've been told). Randy Kryn (talk) 12:03, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I need to make sure I don't allow myself to get too worried about minor details stressing me out this time around! I look forward to collaborating with you again! --woodensuperman 12:07, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
We'll probably argue and duel over details, if not it wouldn't be Wikipedia, but not enough to stress. Some of the arguments here go on for tens of thousands of words, have read some epic ones in the last years. Let me know if help is needed on one of your projects or a disagreement on style, etc. Made my day, seeing you back. See you on the slopes! Randy Kryn (talk) 12:12, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Unused Templates Task Force

Hey, I've noticed you being active in Tfd's for the past few days. If you're interested in joining the task force I started, the Unused Templates Task Force, feel free to join and participate. WikiCleanerMan (talk) 00:13, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Woodensuperman, I saw that you once again undid my edit on the article Flo. Well, I'm new to Wikipedia and I like to understand things, could you explain to me why this inclusion is unnecessary? I consulted other articles and they are basically the same thing, I was in doubt. ?Silencedoc¿ 14:58, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Because the order of succession is already there on the navbox {{Brit Rising Star}} at the bottom, so effectively you're showing the same info twice, which is unnecessary. --woodensuperman 15:50, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
@Woodensuperman sorry, so need to remove one to keep the other? I think I got confused when I made the edit. ?Silencedoc¿ 16:06, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
Yes, but it should be the navbox that stays, not the succession box. --woodensuperman 11:18, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
why? the other articles I consulted have the succession Box. ?Silencedoc¿ 13:17, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
If I may jump in here. Are succession boxes shown on mobile? Navboxes aren't, which is why what may seem like duplicate information actually is not because well over half the readers don't receive navboxes. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:21, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Randy Kryn, Answering your question, yes the succession boxes shown on mobile. Navbox are hidden. ?Silencedoc¿ 13:32, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. If that's the case then there seems no problem in including both if the editor feels up to creating such a thing. Can't say tnformation is duplicated if half the readers cannot read the data being referred to. I can understand how succession boxes could be considered clutter on some pages, but I'm not a succession box creator and seldom read them (I also don't pull up the internet on my phone so, as I've been saying, as to not carry the addiction around with me). Randy Kryn (talk) 13:38, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
As far as I can see, NONE of the other articles in this series have a succession box. --woodensuperman 13:47, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Series? Sam Smith and Nicki Minaj have. ?Silencedoc¿ 13:56, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Nicki Minaj did not even win one of these, so not sure what she has to do with it! And ugh, the clutter on the Sam Smith page! --woodensuperman 14:08, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
As for navboxes on mobile, you'd think with the two zillion dollars the Foundation receives each year somebody somewhere could come up with coding to make navbox mobile viewing possible and non-intrusive. I've questioned that in the past and received a no-way-Jose answer from a Foundation editor (probably thinking my off-line name is Jose). Randy Kryn (talk) 14:15, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
@Woodensuperman, What? Nicki Minaj remains a succession box. If Sam Smith's article is wrong, how about editing it? Well, I can name others, like Eminem, Dua Lipa and especially Drake. ?Silencedoc¿ 14:27, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
But these are not succession boxes for this award. For it to have any navigation value at all these would need to be present on all the pages, which is why a navbox is a much neater solution --woodensuperman 14:37, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Also, note with Drake, only the one that doesn't have a navbox is in the succession table. --woodensuperman 14:42, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
@Woodensuperman, "this award." would be the Rising Star? It is one of the main categories of THE BRITs, Adele and Sam Smith own it. In the succession table, other articles do not even have a navbox, but are cited. ?Silencedoc¿ 14:53, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Woodensuperman, re-added Navboxes to the article, changing a few things. Hope you don't remove it. ?Silencedoc¿ 22:13, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
You removed one of the navboxes which was relevant, and added an irrelevant one {{Universal Music Group}} which should not be there. As I keep saying, including the succession box is WP:UNDUE as it repeats the navbox and gives too much weight to this award over anything else, please stop adding it. --woodensuperman 11:11, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Woodensuperman, The reason you remove it every time, is that you consider Rising Star to be an irrelevant navbox? and that why should keep invisible? ?Silencedoc¿ 12:19, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Not at all, you are the one who removed the Rising Star navbox, I put it back. The navbox should definitely stay. What is not needed is the succession box. As I have already mentioned, this is duplicate information, and it is not included on most of the other articles on this series, so it does not perform any significant navigation function, as the chain ends after the first article. --woodensuperman 12:29, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
@Woodensuperman, got it. But I removed it to keep the succession box. Okay, there are two problems, I don't want to argue, but understand. First, duplicate information? could you explain to me what was duplicated? I thought that by removing the navbox and adding the succession box, it would no longer be a duplication. Second, are you referring to not being included in other articles in the same series? For example, predecessor Holly? Anyway, the problem is that there are other articles where the predecessors do not have the succession box, but they are included in other articles. ?Silencedoc¿ 12:41, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
The navbox should be there to preserve WP:BIDIRECTIONALITY, the succession box is the unnecessary one. The only other article in this series with the succession box is Sam Smith, and frankly I'm inclined to remove a lot of that succession box clutter from that article. --woodensuperman 12:44, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks and sorry. ?Silencedoc¿ 12:51, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Events page moves

Hi. Please do not mass move pages like you did today. Please self-revert and raise an RM. — DaxServer (t · m · e · c) 10:36, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi @DaxServer:, If you look at the page histories, you'll see that I was reverting undiscussed moves made by another user a couple of days ago. --woodensuperman 10:39, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
See [1][2][3][4][5]. --woodensuperman 10:51, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
Although it does seem that there was one with an existing requested move that may have been overlooked when I was reverting the other user's moves, so apologies for that. WP:NOYEAR is still the relevant guideline though. --woodensuperman 10:46, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
I see. Thanks for the clarification. I actually overlooked your edit summary where you stated you are reverting. Sorry about that — DaxServer (t · m · e · c) 13:16, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello Woodensuperman,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Reminders

Portland restaurants

I noticed some of your comments made regarding the notability of Portland restaurant articles and I have to say I completely agree with what you have to say. It seems as if the AfDs don't get enough participation and they end up getting closed as keep despite the fact that no real consensus was ever reached. I would be keen to continue pursuing these articles for AfD but it seems like the creator has a lot of fight and as long as there is coverage in The Oregonian, most of these articles will never be deleted, despite the fact that this is a local source. I believe there are plenty of other editors who would agree with this assessment. Would you be interested in trying to build a case against some of these articles? I know it seems a lot of work but I think it's important to stop Wikipedia becoming a glorified tourist guide. Willbb234 13:00, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for your comments. It seems that this would be too hard a fight that I just can't be bothered to have the energy for. Any discussion seems to have been sewn up buy a cabal of editors. I think really this should be taken to a higher forum, maybe the WP:Village Pump? --woodensuperman 13:15, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Extended content
Willbb234, hello as well. Usually on Wikipedia when another editor is discussed it is polite to ping them to include them in the conversation. Another Believer may or may not have a comment to address your concerns, but at least give him a chance. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:45, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Blah, I'm so tired of the Portland restaurant deletion drama. I'll pass on discussing further. ---Another Believer (Talk) 13:51, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
@Randy Kryn: I wasn't discussing this user. I was discussing the articles. Read again. Willbb234 13:54, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
I also think Another Believer has perfectly demonstrated why including them in the discussion won't bring anything constructive. Willbb234 13:55, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
No need for anything constructive, aside from the hoped-for creation of Portland hardware store articles, but as I've said at a deletion attempt or two, Portland is lucky to have a Wikipedian like Another Believer to give it a useful series. There would be no problem if every city on the globe had prominent restaurant pages. My preference would be for Indian food restaurants, or the wonderful Thai place on the top of Montmartre, but to be serious, please realize that if even one restaurant has been covered on Wikipedia with reliable sources then any restaurant can rightfully be included. That's how cites work, if a topic has proven notable then notable it is, and if a topic-lineage, such as any and all restaurants in the world, has been opened for article acceptance, then if adequate sourcing is found they should be kept as notable. Maybe reconsider rounding up a posse to take down the Portland restaurant pages and go to dinner at your favorite eatery instead. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 14:09, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Woodensuperman,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello Woodensuperman:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 900 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:25, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

People acquitted of sex crimes

Technically "didn't do" and "acquitted" are not the same thing. However in some cases they are. This really looks like a way to smear people even though they were acquitted. It is not a good way to group people I have to agree. It also would open even worse categories, like ones for charges that were never pursued, etc.John Pack Lambert (talk) 13:55, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for conversing at the navbox discussion about images, my apologies for "calling you in" but this had gone into edit-war and banning territory so I thought it needed another knowledgable navbox editor to take an overview. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:54, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Invitation

Hello Woodensuperman, we need experienced volunteers.
  • New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, it basically boils down to checking CSD, notability, and title). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us.
  • If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions. You can apply for the user-right HERE.
  • If you have questions, please feel free to drop a message at the reviewer's discussion board.
  • Cheers, and hope to see you around.
